The 1936 Olympics were know as the Games of the XI Olympiad. Josef Gobbels convinces Hitle to allow the games to happen in Germany. Hitler only allowed members og the "Aryan race" to play for germany. Jesse Owens won four gold medals and showed good athleticism. Germany won the most medals in the 1936 Olympics. Hitler took down all of the "Jews not wanted" signs. The German Ministry was authorized to arrest the gypsies and put them in a special camp. Foreign visitors were not subjected to the anti-homosexual laws. There were different oppinions on whether the 1936 summer Olympics, should be allowed or discontinued. The US thought of boycotting the games because participating might be thought of support for the Nazi Germany regime and anti-Semitic policies. Others said that the Olympic Games shouldn't be a reflection of political views but a contest of great athletes. The President of the American Olympic Committee said that they shouldn't do the boycott because the Jews were being treated fairly. Avery Brundage said "The very foundation of the modern Olympic revival will be undermined if individual countries are allowed to restrict participation by reason of class, creed, or race." Most African Americans supported the Olympics, but American Jewish organizations said no to the Olympics. Brundage won the debate. Amateur Athletic Union closed a vote on if they should send and American team to the Olympics or not. Brundage won by only two and a half votes. Roosevelt demanded that the United Stated participate in the Olympic Games to keep the trafition of America being void outside infuence intact.
Jesse Owens (1913-80) was one of the greatest track-and-field athletes of all time. He won four gold medals for the, 100-m dash which he completed in 10.3 sec setting the record, 200-m dash completed in 20.7 sec and set another record, running broad jump with leap 26ft 51in and set yet another record, and the 400-m relay in 39.8 sec and set another world record. Adolf Hitler didn't acknowledge his Olympic victories because Jesse was black. Hitler refused to shake hands with Jesse Owens. The Olympic rings and torch did not originate in Ancient Greece, but actually originated in Nazi Germany. The lasting power of the symbols shows how effective the Nazis were at creating powerful images. There was never any torch at the ancient Olympic Games or anything like it. German classicsts who helped Hitler out did make two new traditions in ancient Greece. Hitler said before the torchh was lit, "helps knit the bonds of peace between nations. Therefore may the Olympic flame never expire." Germans won the XIth Olympiad.
Coke sponsored the 1936 Nazi Olympics where Hitler showed hit Aryan vision to the world. It was a bit of a joke that if Hitler or a high ranking Nazi was on the front cover of the magazine Coke would be advertised on the back.
